Hana is the best place for Japanese cuisine in Burlington. Hana offers consistently excellent food and service of the highest quality. The atmosphere is decent--it almost has a cafeteria feel--however, the food and service are so good the atmosphere doesn't matter. The Hibachi and Sushi menu are amazing! The portions are large, the drinks are good, the prices are reasonable, and the staff are friendly and professional. Hana has the best Japanese food in the Burlington.

Very good. I was not expecting much, no one was here but me. The spring rolls were very tasty and light. I got the angry bird roll. Was not like any other place I have been. Good job, Hana. I will return. Four stars because the bathroom hand dryer fan is so loud it drowns out the dining room.

Had the pleasure of dining here with a group of Yelpers and it was a blast! From the very beginning (my calling them at 11:00am on the day of) to taking care of bills at the end of the evening, it was a friendly and tasty experience. The woman who took my reservation was extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant was unbelievably accommodating, they gave us extra space and even (much to my surprise) agreed to split up the bills amongst the 6 or 7 different parties. For food I would recommend the crab rangoons and the spicy rolls (by far my favorite of all the things we had that night). My only suggestion here would be to have more 'party size offerings' since what we did was order a lot of single appetizers to share. The customer service was the highlight of the dining experience-- and I'm excited to go back to try out some of their other kitchen items since mostly what I sampled was sushi.

The loss of Sakura left a void in my heart (and stomach) for a solid Japanese restaurant around town. Hana did an alright job of filling that void. The service was prompt and attentive but the food could have been better. The chicken teriyaki was a C-, salmon teriyaki B, beef negimaki B, shrimp tempura B-. California rolls were pretty standard. I imagine I'll stop by again someday, but as of now I don't really see the point in paying San Sai prices for average Japanese.

I am going to be really honest and right up front say that I was not very impressed with the quality of the food at this establishment. Though our waitress was very friendly and accommodating, the food was sincerely nothing to write home about. We had a variety of appetizers and sushi rolls but none of them had any significant bursts of flavor. Everything was just sort of bland and tasteless. I was also rather unimpressed with the prices at the restaurant- there is no reason for simple Katsu to cost $16...

Ordered delivery, arrived after an hour, good food. My friend got the gyoza and said it wasn't excellent but it was very good. I got the teriyaki salmon and avocado roll and it was wonderful. The large miso soup order is huge. The chicken and shrimp tempura is very tasty as well. I'm definitely ordering again. :)

Went back on a Thursday night. There were a lot more people, but the waitress didn't really understand me or speak English. This made for a relatively unpleasant experience, but I do think she's new and just needs to get used to it. I still love the ambiance and was much happier with the atmosphere with more people than last time. The waitress really ruined the experience for me though. I do think this was a one time thing as she did try but just didn't know the language. On to the food: #Yakitori - this was super disappointing. It was dry and not savory, not at all what I'd expect the yakitori to be. #Small hibachi noodles - only $4 without any meats and a lot for the price! The noodles are really good and have a nice smoky flavor to them. It's also fantastic value. #Eel avocado roll - fresh and good. Didn't blow me away but it was good. The sauce was great and I was able really to taste the eel. #Hibachi soup - just as good as last time. Strong mushroom taste and very savory. #Hibachi chicken combination dinner - sauces were really good, but chicken left more to be desired. They were less dry than the yakitori, but still not great. Overall, don't get chicken here and opt for other meats! Get the $4 hibachi noodles or rice for great value. Meats are only $2 more so there's a nice good valued meal right there.

My friend and I ate here after reading these reviews. We were really hungry for sushi and we were not disappointed. Started off with the house salad. This was not your usual ginger dressed salad! The salad had blackberries, cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes. The dressing was so delicious we had to ask for a spoon to eat it all up off the bottom. And it was a generous size for a house salad. We had shrimp tempura roll, Angry Bird roll and Hana roll. All amazing! Wish we'd had room to try more. The Cosmo and glass of house Pinot Grigio were good also. We are not from Burlington, but this will always be on the agenda when we have cause to return. Excellent, excellent.

Average flavor, rolls were on the smallish side similar to Price Chopper size rolls, $15 for an 8 roll special seems a bit too high given the small size of the rolls

I was in town for work and decided to stop in for sushi. I sat at the little bar so that I didn't have to take up a table. (although, there was only maybe 5 other patrons) My service was prompt. I ordered three rolls and I strongly recommend the Vermont Roll and the Red Dragon Roll. There is nothing really unique about this place to make it stand out, but a nice solid option if you are in the mood for good sushi!

Really delicious experience! I have MSG/additive restrictions -- our server was willing to customize the sushi, make hibachi with gluten free soy etc. we will definitely be back

  • Nateoc O.

Fantastic hibachi, bento, and sushi. You wouldn't think that walking in, but it's true. Note, the hibachi isn't in front of you; it's back in the kitchen. But. their hibachi is delicious and plentiful. The servers are really nice too.

Love this place. Been visiting here at least twice a week for the last 6 months and was never disappointed - great food, excellent service, better prices in comparison to the competition in downtown. Can work great for the kids- the food is served super fast... Other small joys of life- huge free parking, getting a table is never a problem, long working hours...

  • Aaron B.

Poor service. They were swamped with half of the restaurant empty. Once the sushi came out the texture was right around mush and the quality was just lacking. Took 45-60 minutes for our food to come out. Overall terrible experience and wouldn't go back. Very disappointed

A group of 10 of us ate here tonight, and we were all pleased! The service was very good -- our server took great care of us and we never felt neglected. Water glasses were always full, and she was always prompt at removing dishes that we were done with. I am not a seafood/fish eater, but those of us that are were all quite happy. My non-seafood dishes were really good. I had Crab Rangoons, chicken & chive skewers, tempura veggies, fried rice, and fruit rolls -- all delicious. It sort of fell apart a little bit at the end. I was on a check with my parents, because we had a coupon, but then when I wanted to put my food on my CC and put the remainder on my parents, we were not allowed to do that, so I paid for the whole thing and need to trust that mom and dad will pay me back! Also, when we sat down, we realized that two of us had coupons. It did clearly state that only one coupon per table, but she told us that since we would be on several separate checks that that would be fine, but alas at payment time, we were not allowed to use both coupons. (We used ours and my sister will save hers for another time.) Not a big deal, because we were sort of expecting that, but too bad our server had said otherwise. I am still giving the place 5-stars despite these few issues. Everything else was really great. I've eaten at Koto before and HATED IT, and will definitely be back to HANA!

  • Brian D.

Loved it! Like another reviewer said, wish they were busier. All the food was perfect, came out quickly and very hot. Pretty good value for the $$. In fact, the Bento Box I ordered with Salmon and Tempura Shrimp was probably the best I've had in years and it was cooked to perfection. The portions were very generous as well. Nice place to go and perhaps the quiet is nice for a change.

This place is legit. Wish more people would come here. It's completely dead but the food is amazing. Not too mention the scorpion bowl. So big and actually made right.

  • Aron G.

The sushi I had was fresh and tasty. I went with a large group and they were kind enough to split up the check between the whole party. The service was excellent and the prices were quite reasonable. I am definitely a fan!

  • Jennifer G.

I live just down the street from Hana, this is by far my go to restaurant for take out or dinning in. Jen is my fav waitress, she is always attentive, pleasant, and makes sure my kids and I are enjoying our selves. The atmosphere could be a bit warmer which is why its a 4 not 5 star review. Food is excellent!

  • brad l.

Great attentive wait staff. All the food was fresh and delicious. Got a fruity adult drink that was larger than what I had for breakfast but the cheaper. The lunch box special was great and served fast. Both the beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura were delicious. Only complaint is the fresh fruit was honey dew. The most attentive wait staff I can remember with great fresh food fast equal 5 stars. Cant wait to go back already.

I went here Monday night with my sister as we had heard that it was good and we were craving sushi. We were there at about 5:30 pm and a little nervous that we were the first people there for dinner but our fears were unfounded. I agree completely with the other reviewers that the taste is far better than Kotos - very unique sushi rolls and incredibly fresh seafood in general. I had the tempura at both locations recently and I couldn't finish the one at Kotos... the vegetables did not taste as fresh and the coating wasn't as tasty as the one served at Hana. We were both also quite pleased with the cost of drinks - $6.75-ish for most cocktails is quite a steal in the Burlington area! My sister and I split the assorted tempura appetizer (as mentioned), the spicy girl roll, the sweet girl roll, and a couple of pieces of tuna and salmon sushi. I can't tell you enough how delicious everything was, not to mention SO pretty. The decor feels a little dated but the food and excellent service far make up for it. Our waitress was patient and sweet. I generally don't go for restaurants in strip malls but this was a treat!

  • Amy G.

My husband loves the sushi there and I like everything else. Last night I had the Hibachi salmon dinner, it was delicious! The large portion was more than enough for dinner last night and lunch today, and the bountiful sauteed veggies were great too. Great service.

  • Caitlin S.

Whoah. Whoah in the BEST possible way. I was so taken aback by how DELICIOUS the Sushi was here, that my awe was certainly apparent to the waitstaff. Upon my first visit tonight, I can say I am officially hooked and wish I had three stomachs to fit all the sushi I wanted to eat in one sitting. I had a stellar experience at the bar with a beer and a few rolls- the chef himself checked to make sure I loved my food. Being a tough critic from NYC- Whoah. ;))

I'm a sushi chef here in burlington and I have too say this is one of my favorite spots. It's a hidden gem!! The food and sushi is always hot and fresh. The drinks are amazing. The staff are good, there very attentive! I just wish they were busier but I don't mind the quiet dinners.

Great sushi. Great Bento boxes. Great flavors, presentation, and freshness. We have been here just 4 times now and will definitely be back. The place looks great, the servers are friendly. The food comes out quick. Great place for lunch or a big dinner party. This could be the new favorite sushi spot in the area. A+

  • Joey F.

Very impressed with the quality of sushi and rolls. Fresh and delicious! Their lunch specials are spectacular as well. You get so much food for a GREAT price! To be frank, I am VERY accustomed to Japanese restaurants run by actual Japanese staff. However, the staff here is always super friendly and attentive and don't make you wait very long for your order. Being from Seattle, I didn't expect to find a sushi spot in Burlington that would please me but Hana has done so!

  • Marlana Y.

Service is very fast and friendly. The prices are a bit too much on the high end for me but a pro is you can use your student id for 10% discount! The luck salad was good - nice amt of crunch with spicy tuna and tobiko. I actually am going to try and see if they can use salmon instead- Because I love salmon! Again it is a bit on the pricy side so may not come here as often as I would like.

One of the best we had on a recent trip to Burlington, our dinner at Hana deserves five stars for sure: - Hibachi soup: as the server gentleman described, this was thicker and heartier than miso soup, and we could definitely taste the beef. Nice! - Nabeyaki udon with shrimp tempura: with this one you can either have udon or soba, and my udon was flavourful and filling. I also liked the clear soup with green veggies. Recommended. - Tornado roll: just as pictured and one of the best versions ever, everything as it should be. Nice big, clean, open dining room and good service with great food, it was well worth it.

Not many great places to get sushi in the Burlington area-- I like the Asiana house in Mplr the best, then Hana (this place), then the Asiana house downtown to put them in order. Hana seems a tiny bit more expensive and the atmosphere is kind of plain but that's ok the Maki rolls (which are why I come here) are darn good.

    (4)
  • Eric M.

Ate here based on other yelp reviews, but I felt the quality and portion size was mediocre. Much better sushi to be found in the area.

    (2)
  • Michelle Y.

Sushi is great. Quality and slice size was excellent. We had white tuna, red snapper, yellowtail, seared tuna. ..all delicious. We ordered one roll which I was not crazy about, but my boyfriend enjoyed. It is strange that they do no carry Japanese beer. The atmosphere is casual. Can't emphasize the sushi quality, really good.

If you want Japanese food in the Burlington area, this is the place to go. Portions are good, food is tasty, service is quick and polite, and prices are reasonable. Don't bother with Koto, and definitely go to Hana instead.

1 star for customer service. Chaotic in this tiny little place. The lead server, not sure her position is, but she doesn't give you the time of day. I didn't make reservation. I walked in and the lead server brought me to the sushi/bar area. I sat there for maybe 4 min before she came back to give me water. Another 2-4min before she came back to ask for what to drink. Then another 8min for my order. And more wait. I ordered hot green tea. It was brought to me now 20 min later. Good Grief!! They seem to have very limited staff with 2 sushi chefs. I am glad I don't live here. Over heard one person waiting for take out complaining for waiting about 1hr 20 min for the take out.

In town for business for the week and we came across this location through yelp and we decided to give it a try. Boy were we pleased! Excellent food, quiet location and plenty of seating. The food price was average with the area and staff was very friendly. If we are ever in town I am sure will be back!

Sushi was excellent; some of the best around! The Plum Blossom was amazing!! Very quiet place though, not too busy on a Tuesday night.

I absolutely loveee this place! They have amazinggg hibachi dinners and rolls. I used to love Kotos but the hibachi here is even better (you must have the sauces with it). I also love the tempura rolls and their homemade spicy mayo. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone! :)

A nice restaurant with good sushi. It's not that expensive, and you can also enjoy their delicious sushi!

Hana's is close by and we've gotten some yummy food from them, both takeout and dine-in. Each time it's been lovely and they have a very large menu. The prices are a bit cheaper than Asiana house, but the quality seems about the same. The take-out we got was made really quickly and was delicious. They always have some great and interesting specials.

Hands down the best Japanese food in Burlington. Don't bother with Koto. Asiana House is second-best. The food at Hana is excellent.

I've gone with my boyfriend twice now, thanks to Jump On It! It's maybe a bit pricey for us, without the coupon, but I think it's great food. They have late hours which I like, and everyone there was also really nice! We've ordered the Green Gyoza, Agedashi Tofu, Tempura Udon, Yakiudon, and Vegetable Tempura. The green gyoza is vegetable dumplings, which I thought were delicious. I was also a HUGE fan of the Tempura Udon. The portions seemed giant! Which was awesome, and totally worth the money! Tasted great, everything was presented nicely. But my one recommendation would be to either eat at the restaurant, or live close by for pick-up when ordering certain things. Not a huge deal... but the second time, our tempura was a tiny bit soggy when we got home :) Still tasty though.

Good- We were on a bus tour and the whole bus went to OUTBACK- we went here as it was in the same strip mall. Our meal was good and we were please with the food and service. I was glad we did our meal here as the other people said their meals across the way was overpriced and not good!!! Our meal was expensive but you are in Burlington -

Ate at Hana for the first time tonight -- discovered they just acquired their liquor license today. Service was prompt, courteous and attentive. Food was excellent -- Miso Soup and Hibachi Soup were both enjoyable. Vegetarian Sushi offered a nice assortment and attractive presentation. Hibachi Chicken was large portion, delicious freshly made fried rice, and assortment of vegetables. Seafood dipping sauce was superb. Will return for eat in or take out.

I really hope these folks can survive, a good sushi place in this location would be fantastic. They have a nice selection of Sake, though my go to was $2 more a bottle than other sushi places in town. Seems like they should get the pricing in line. We ordered: Edamame: Actually best I've had out in a while, but I feel like that can happen anywhere, it's tough to find good soybeans in January. Soft-Shell Crab Tempura: This was really tasty, though it was only battered and not rolled in panko which I found odd considering everything else had panko in it for no good reason! Avocado Salad: Not sure how you can mess this up, but for starters mixing it in a half a avocado shell which still had the sticker on it and placing this shell in a bed of panko AND putting panko in it is a good way to mess it up. Wish the kept it simple like most places, also besides the mounds of cheap oil tasting panko the portion was piddly to say the least. Two similar Makis: the Caviar roll and the Hana roll: These were both really nice, and the rice was just right. The only complaint I have is that in both rolls there was panko! I'm not sure whether they think that because everyone likes tempura that adding panko to everything will make it better, but honestly uncooked panko only muddies all the flavors you want and for me was the worst part. Other gripes: no chillers or proper glasses for the Sake. We ordered 3 bottle of chilled Sake and drank it out of rocks glasses. I also agree with another reviewer that the presentation was bland. a $14 roll should have a pattern of sauce or two on the plate, and some nice garnish a tthe least. Now these are all minor things that can and hopefully will be corrected. We'll be going back in a week or two to check it out and see if things are better. If they get it together we'll be regulars as it's off the beaten path and close to home.

Fantastic food, service, and prices. Would love to see them packed with people, since they are just as good as Koto!

A nice, clean restaurant with a pleasant wait staff. The miso soup I ordered was fine with a small salad and delicious dressing. The scallops dish I ordered was ok but nothing I'd go out of the way for. Didn't care much for the rice either. Our friends ordered differently and I must say their food looked very tasty. I will probably try again and order something different next time. Definitely better than Koto's which I gave up on after a couple visits.

OK so the area of East South Burlington needed a Japanese restaurant. The Blue Mall seems like an excellent place for it, lots of parking space. My husband and I like Sushi and wanted to try the new place. The physical part of the restaurant is nice if perhaps a little sterile. The server we had was very friendly, and efficient. The food we thought was good but not great. One thing it really lacked was presentation. The crabmeat salad was stuffed in a small bowl looking less than what you really got, the thin beef strips rolled around bundles of grilled scallions and then broiled were tasty and nicely presented. We each ordered one of their specialty Sushis, one 13.95 and one 12.95. They were good but not great. And the fact that $27 of Sushi came stuffed on a small rectangular plate was a shock. Granted they are a dollar or two cheaper than Koto's but they have a long way to go to catch up. We would have gladly paid a little more, got a few more pieces and had each Sushi presented separately. So much of the taste is in the eyes.

This is a great sushi restaurant! We came in with a buy one meal, get one half off coupon, which they happily honored. The service was very friendly. The restaurant was very clean. We both ordered Mai Tais, which were very refreshing. For dinner, we had the crazy tuna roll... It was very fresh and delicious! I highly recommend this place!:-)

Had a craving for sushi while shopping across the street and saw how close the place was so we stopped in. we got some miso soup, a California roll, shrimp tempura roll and something called fire island, all were delicious!! finished off with some green tea ice cream. only complaint is no free refills on soft drinks, but I didn't think that was worth taking away a star!!

  • Abby B.

my review is a little skewed because I only eat cooked sushi, but as far as price and quality it doesn't get much better. The service is great as well, such friendly but not pushy staff. Everyone I was with loved their food as well. Such a surprise from a tiny place in the blue mall, but totally worth it. Much better than the overrated Koto's. Hana is my sushi go-to for sure.

  • Nancy P.

My experience at Hana is what finally prompted my Yelp membership. The experience was great, but the restaurant needs more people to know how good it is. I am not a expert on Japanese cuisine, but my party of nine were all thrilled with their meals. Our ages ranged from 20 to 87. Our sushi experience was nil to best U.S. has to offer. Everything was great. Portions were reasonable. I can't wait to return to Burlington to visit Hana again. Another review commented that Hana is as good as Koto....be serious, it is soooo much better. I will never visit Koto again. Great food, good service, reasonable prices, clean and comfortable!
